      Another book for the beginning opera fan, this one is brief, facile and irrelevant. Denis Forman's A Night At the Opera is a much better bet if you want good synopses of the basic repertoire. Phil Goulding's Ticket To The Opera offers a much better history of opera. Barrymore Laurence Scherer's Bravo! A Guide to Opera for the Perplexed does the same thing this book does - a brief history of the art form followed by chapters on the basic repertoire arranged by country - but it does it a lot bette [...]

      If you're a long-time fan of opera, there isn't much new information here. Still, it includes a good overview of the history, as well as handy summaries of the librettos.
